South Kensington

South Kensington Area Guide

South Kensington Area

First, a little insider knowledge. Londoners have dropped the “sington” and refer to the area as South Ken – much easier to say and type! South Ken is an affluent area with some of the prettiest architecture in London. You will find a strong multicultural population, with the French having a particularly strong foothold here due to the Lycée Français and Institut Français. The area is also home to the second highest population of expat Americans in the UK. There is also a large student population, with the famous Imperial College campus and the Royal Colleges of Art and Music adding a youthful vibe.

South Kensington is a mecca for tourists due to the famous and free museums all clustered together on Exhibition Road; The Science, Natural History and Victoria and Albert Museums all offer a great day out. Just up the road, the Albert Hall peers onto the vast expanse of trees and greenery of Hyde Park, a wonderful space to escape the bustle of London or go for a run or roller blade. Technically, Hyde Park is just one of the parks that people call Hyde Park, the other being Kensington Gardens.

The area has excellent transport links and straddles the main road west out of London which gives you easy access to Heathrow or, if you rent a car, some magical English countryside to visit within an hour’s drive. Nearby tubes and buses can whisk you off to all that London has to offer.
